Robertson reveals shock and horror at domestic abuse victims being let down

September 18, 2020 6:10 PM

Essex Lib Dem PFCC candidate Callum Robertson revealed his shocked at victims of domestic abuse being reported to the Home Office Immigration as a result of reporting their experiences.

Earlier today, Robertson listened to workers at Essex domestic abuse charity Changing Pathways who told him that abuse victims were being detained in immigration centres after they disclosed their abuse to the Police.

Responding to this revelation Robertson said:

"I am shocked that the police would let victims of abuse down like this. The duty of the police is to protect victims, not hand them over to immigration authorities when they have had the courage to report their abuse"

Challenging the incumbent PFCC, Conservative Roger Hirst, Robertson said:

"This is simply unacceptable, any decent person can agree with that fact. As the incumbent Commissioner, the buck stops with Mr Hirst. He needs to call out and challenge this utterly counter-productive behaviour.

As Commissioner Mr Hirst has a duty of care to these victims, handing them over to immigration officials for deportation is a morally decrepit abdication of that duty"
